The Rizal Crossing shows what happens when local voices, local boards, and government work together for the common good. Imagine what could be achieved if that same commitment were directed toward protecting and revitalising the Avondale Racecourse for generations to come.

A Win for Connection: What the Rizal Crossing Means for Avondale’s Future
On 12 September 2025, the central government confirmed full funding for the Rizal Crossing section of Te Whau Pathway. This section will link Wingate Street to Rizal Reserve and then bridge across the Whau River to Ken Maunder Park. It’s a milestone made possible through sustained advocacy by the Whau Local Board and the Te Whau Pathway Trust.
This development is more than just a bridge – it’s part of building a safer, healthier, more connected, and sustainable Whau. Pathways like this invite us to imagine an Avondale where neighbourhoods, green spaces, and people are linked together by walkways and cycleways, not divided by heavy traffic and high-density concrete.
As decisions are made about the future of Avondale Racecourse, the Rizal Crossing reminds us of what’s possible when we choose interconnection over isolation. Retaining and enhancing green space at the racecourse could extend this vision: a community hub where pathways, parks, and people meet. Instead of cutting Avondale off with walls of apartments, we can weave it into the wider Whau through walkways, trees, sports, and gathering places.
